Mario was born in Chicago, IL, to Antonio and Cruz Martinez. He moved to Kansas City, Kansas when he was in middle school. There he met Gloria Buso. They married on August 17, 1968, and raised nine children. They later divorced.
Mario attended Wyandotte High School. He graduated from Kansas City Kansas Community College Nursing School in 1983. He attentively cared for his mother in the final years of her life.
He had a keen intellect and was well-versed in the Bible, current events, and politics. His past times included gardening, especially peppers and petunias. He enjoyed watching westerns and playing scratcher lottery tickets. He loved his morning coffee, Mexican food of any type, a good hamburger, and most of all fried chicken. He had an extreme love for music that was passed on to all his children. Our Saturday mornings were filled with music and dancing.
