Duane L. McIntyre, known as Mac to all who knew him, passed away on St. Valentine’s Day in the care of his loving wife, Sharon McIntyre, at KC Hospice House. He was born July 13, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Lloyd McIntyre and Sylvia (Coughenour) McIntyre. Duane graduated from Des Moines Technical High School and then Drake University. While attending Drake, he met Sheri, Sharon (Ferch) McIntyre, his wife of 63 years. Duane served in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard units in Iowa, Kansas and Missouri for a total of 41 years retiring as USAF Major.
Duane is predeceased by his parents. Survived by his wife, Sheri and his children; Cyndi McClelland and her husband Greg of San Diego, CA; Sheila Thorp and her husband Todd of Leawood, KS; Julie Birch of Elmhurst, IL and Doug McIntyre and his wife Beth of Overland Park, KS.
Duane’s family was his circle of love and strength, which includes his grandchildren: Mackenzie Anderson, Cooper McClelland, Connor McClelland, Madison Pitts, Chase Thorp, Kelsey Thorp, Madelyn Birch, Jack Birch, Daniel McIntyre, Sophia McIntyre, Sarah Kate McIntyre and his great grandchildren: Sloan Anderson, Tenbrook Anderson, and Peyton Pitts.
One of Duane’s favorite pastimes involved classical cars – finding, collecting, driving and trading them. Duane really liked working in his yard, a good political debate, and chocolate chip cookies. Duane was as tough as they come having battled West Nile, Prostate Cancer, and Parkinson’s disease.
