Eugene G. Guerra, 60 of KCMO passed away at home Wednesday, January 2, 2019 Eugene was a dedicated husband, son, brother, father and grandfather who never turned down the chance to help those in need. He was an avid motorcycle and Alien enthusiast. He was loved by so many and will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Felicia Guerra and two sisters, Rebecca (Becky) Guerra and FeMaria Guerra. Eugene is survived by his wife Pamela Guerra, daughter Stephanie Welsh (Anthony) and three grandchildren, Marc, Alessandra and Caitlin Welsh; three brothers, Anthony (Tony) (Karen), Roman (Lisa) and Martin (Christi); four sisters, Eva Hernandez (John Brenneman), Ernie Guerra-Wilbanks, Bobbie Jo Ruiz (Albert) and Michelle (Shelly) Brown (Frank) and many nieces and nephews.

Melana Marie (Sumonia) Cooke

Melana Marie (Sumonia) Cooke, 85, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018, at Glenwood Village Home Health in Overland Park, Kansas.
She was born July 4, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Milan Sumonia and Mae (Strika) Sumonia, who preceded her in death. On April 17, 1953, she married Louis Cooke.

Melana worked for a number of companies including Marion Merrell Dow, Folgers coffee and as a paralegal. In retirement she remainedbusy, working part-time at a local Hallmark store and volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages and Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. She was also a worthy advisor for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She was known for her green thumb and her love of reading. Melana was a Johnson County Master Gardener and she and Louis transformed their backyard, filling the entire space with flowers, bushes, vegetable plants, a large fish pond with water lilies and even a playhouse for their grandchildren. When she wasn’t getting her hands dirty in the garden, she had her nose in a book from the library, a trait she passed on to her family.

She and Louis also loved to round dance, traveling across the country to do so.In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Randy (Ann) Cooke, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Gary (Kathy) Cooke, of Elk Grove Village, Illinois; one sister, Katherine Rogers, of West Point, Georgia, and four grandchildren, Nicole, Laura, Brian and Kerry. She is also preceded in death by two brothers, Milan Sumonia Jr. and Duke Sumonia.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, 12251 Antioch Road, Overland Park, Kansas, 66213. Burial will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens for immediate family only.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Great Plains SPCA or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kansas City Funeral Directors.

Funeral service 11 am with visitation at 10 am at Rose of Sharon, 9621 E 38th Terr., KCMO on Friday, January 04, 2019. Burial at Platte City Cemetery, Platte City, MO.
 
Rev Winona Mae Pike was born in rural Urbana, Missouri on June 05, 1936. She passed away at North Kansas City Hospital on December 30, 2018. Winona graduated from Park Hill High School in 1955. In the fall of 1956 she attended Kansas City Bible College for one year.
 
After returning to Kansas City, she worked at Menorah Medical Center as a Certified Nurses Aid. Winona met and married William Albert Pike in April 1959. She and Bill came into Pentecost in February 1973 at Souls Harbor Assembly of God church in Independence, MO under Rev Quattlebaum. In 1976 they started attending Gospel Lighthouse church in Kansas City. In November 1977 Rev. Bill Jennings asked them to take the children’s church. It was in that time frame they created and became known in ministry as Uncle Fatty and Aunt Donut.  Winona and Bill were both licensed in 1980 as Pentecostal Church of God ministers. Winona worked a total of 7 districts of the PCG Junior Camps plus Junior Rallies. She and Paul attended Rose of Sharon Church in 2016.
 
When the Outreach ministry began serving breakfast to the men from City Union Mission in 2017, she saw opportunity and began teaching at the breakfast. She had interest in nutrition and natural remedies for healing. Being creative and talented, she crocheted many beautiful items. Other favorites were hats and cats. She was an avid reader, especially the Bible and could recite what book, and usually what chapter, any scripture was in when you asked her. She spoke often of her love for her four sons, Bruce, Paul, Gary and Dana.  Winona is also survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Fittingly, her favorite song was “The Blood”. With a teaching ministry span of 69 years, she knew that Without the shed of Jesus, that there is no remission of sins.

Michael David Sharp 

Michael David Sharp, 56, passed away peacefully, yet unexpectedly, at his home in Shawnee on December 24, 2018. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 5, 1:00 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, OP, KS.

Mike was a graduate of SM East HS, Ottawa University, a retired research librarian at Black & Veatch, and a competitive runner and cyclist until being struck by a car in 1981,resulting in lifelong injuries and complications. He was an avid collector of sports memorabilia and learned to play various musical instruments with his Basset Hounds as the audience. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty; mother, Martha, brothers, Bill (Sonya), Dan (Raquel), nephews, Jack, Harry, Owen, and Sam. His father, Herb, will be catching baseballs with him in heaven.

Kathleen S. Rothenberger, 76, of Leawood, Kansas passed away December 18, 2018. Memorial Service, Friday, December 28, 2018 at 6:30 pm with visitation at 5:30 pm at Kansas City Funeral Directors, 4880 Shawnee Drive, Kansas City, Kansas 66106. BONNIE ILENE (COOK) JOHNSON

Bonnie Ilene (Cook) Johnson, Kansas City, died December 15, 2018, at Northcare Hospice House in North Kansas City. Bonnie requested that a private graveside burial be held at Lockwood, Missouri, next to her deceased husband, Terryl F. Johnson, who died December 10, 1995. Bonnie was born April 29, 1927, in Brookhaven, Georgia, the daughter of Mary (Allenbrand) and Clifford
Cook. She left Georgia as a baby and resided in Missouri until her death. She was in the secretarial profession for 27 years and had been active in the International
Secretaries Association, Westport Chapter. She attended Union College, Lincoln, Nebraska, for two years and later received an Associate in Arts Degree at Maple Woods
Community College, Kansas City, Missouri.

Bonnie enjoyed volunteering at the North Kansas City Hospital and with Youth Friends in the North Kansas City School district. She was a member of the Parents’ Association of Higginsville Rehabilitation Center, Congress of Advocates for the Retarded, Inc., and the Community of the Good Shepherd. She leaves a daughter, Barbara James of Kansas City, Missouri, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Jimmy James, parents, brothers and sisters.

Bonnie had many friends that were always there for her and she enjoyed a very rewarding life.

ANTONIO "TONY" VIVEROS

Antonio “Tony” Viveros was born on December 15, 1924, in Kansas City, Kansas to Jose and Natividad Viveros where he lived until his early teens.

He was the middle of five siblings: brother, Jose (preceded him in death), sister Sor Aurora (preceded him in death), brother Octavio and sister Celia.

After the death of his father in 1935, his mother thought it would be best for her family to return to her home in Mexico where he lived until returning to the United States in the early 1950’s.

While in Mexico he met and married Guadalupe Suarez (preceded him in death). They had four children. Jose Antonio (preceded him in death) and three daughters: Lucia, Marta and Elizabeth.

In Mexico, Tony worked for the Post Office and then for a Lumber Mill transporting materials.

After returning to Kansas he worked for a packing house for many years and then in 1967 he joined Sear’s Roebuck & Company located at 95th & Metcalf where he worked until his retirement.

In 1969, he married Mercedes Perez (proceeded him in death). He became a stepfather to her children, son Armando Perez Sr., daughters: Margarita Perez (preceded him in death) and Consuelo.

Together, Tony and Mercedes opened and ran a Beauty Salon for many years until Mercedes’s retirement.

He had a great sense of humor, loved to dance and travel. Tony was a devout Catholic who loved to share what it meant to be a Catholic with those he met. He loved going to Mass, praying the Rosary and all the Sacraments.

Tony was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. He loved all those that he knew and those that knew him loved him.

He went to be with his Lord on December 7, 2018.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter , Consuelo “Connie”Gibson, stepson Armando Perez, Sr. (Mary), daughters: Lucia Monroy (Felipe), Marta Garduno (Carlos) and Elizabeth Viveros Suarez, twelve grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Lyle Doyle, Jr. 

Lyle Doyle, Jr., 61, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2018.  Lyle was born and raised in Iola, KS.  Son of Lyle Doyle, Sr. and Patricia Doyle, he is survived by his wife, Mary Jo (Macek) Doyle, and two children, Bethany and Brittney.  He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1980 and worked in retail management.  Services will be held Saturday, December 8, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Shawnee, KS.  Visitation is at 12 noon and Mass at 1:00 p.m.  Interment is Monday, December 10th, at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS, at 9:00 a.m.  Lyle was known for his positive spirit. He remained strong and brave, despite his declining health.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the education fund for the children.
