Jerome Gutierrez, age 61, died from pancreatic cancer, at home in the early morning hours of September 11, 2019, holding the hand of his wife Marcia.

He was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1958, the first child of Delores and Cipriano Gutierrez. He graduated from Our Lady of Guadalupe School, Hayden High School, and Washburn University, where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

In 1983 he married Marcia Pineda, also of Topeka. Together they built a life and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Life brightened being an uncle to Marissa, Morgan, Tyler and Caitlin, and there was added fun with three great nephews and a great niece.

Jerome’s work career began as an educator, first at Hayden High School, where he also coached football. He then went on to teach at YCAT and Capital City School. Jerome also worked at Dynamic Computer Solutions of Topeka, where he was employed at the time of his diagnosis.

He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State Football fan. Golf was a passion where he played out his competitive drive to win. Unfortunately, his wish to play golf to his heart’s content during a future retirement was cut short.

Jerome is preceded in death by his father, a brother-in-law, Michael and his father-in-law, Jack. Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, his two brothers, Patrick, and Daryl (Jackie), his mother-in-law, Mary, sister-in-law, Jackie (Chris), brother-in-law, Mark (Gina), and his nephew, nieces and their children and partners.

Services are scheduled for Friday, September 20, 2019 at Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church, beginning with a rosary at 9:30 A.M. followed by a mass at 10:00 A.M. Afterwards, a gathering of family and friends will be held at the church to share food and memories. Following that, those that would like to may join Jerome’s family at Mt. Calvary Cemetery where his ashes will be placed in the mausoleum.
