Ellen Backstrom Johnson passed away peacefully on August 14, 2021 at the age of 76, surrounded by her beloved husband and family. Ellen was born April 4, 1945 in Radford, Virginia.

She grew up in Salina, Kansas and married the love of her life, her high school sweetheart, Cecil Wade Johnson. The couple was married for nearly 53 years. Ellen studied nursing at Creighton University and worked as an ER nurse in Salina Kansas. Always caring for everyone around her, she was the perfect example of "once a nurse, always a nurse." She was a dedicated friend, neighbor and golf partner to many, and had a long list of close friends she’d collected as the family moved throughout the Midwest. She was a tireless and selfless volunteer – committed to making this world a better place. Most recently, she volunteered for IHN, Unbound and Church of the Ascension. A woman of great faith, Ellen had a lifelong love of reading, learning and most passionately on topics about her beliefs in God. She lived that word daily. Her life was a living example of the Bible verse, Colossians 3:17 "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." Ellen was blessed with a loving family. She is survived by her husband Cecil Wade Johnson, sister and husband Anne and John Dykes; children and their spouses, Michelle and Willy Steele and Bryan and Anne Johnson; grandchildren Madison Steele, Will Steele, Theodore Johnson and Gene Johnson. She will always be remembered by her family as a wonderfully generous and caring woman. She will remain in their hearts forever.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, August 21 at 10 am at The Church of the Ascension, 9510 W. 127th St. Overland Park, KS 66213. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart to Heart International at www.hearttoheart.org or Church of the Ascension-fund for families having financial troubles at www.kcascension.org.
