Alice Mary Torres

Alice Mary Torres, 81, and known to all as Nannie, passed away March 18, 2019 at her home in Kansas City, Missouri.  Nannie was born January 9, 1938 to Harold R. Bombard and Erma Bell Bombard in Burlington, Vermont.  Nannie loved her children and grandchildren.  She was known as Mom to many of her foster children.  Nannie was a member of her church, Life Church, for over 50 years.  She worked as a Sunday school teacher, soul winner, and ladies bake sales leader, raising hundreds of dollars for missions.  Nannie loved her church and her pastors.  She even continued to work in the church until she was no longer able.  Nannie taught her children the most important thing in life was to live for the Lord.  All other things were secondary and things would be all right if you let him lead your life.  In her dying days she was still committed to the church and insisted that her building pledge be taken care of before she passed getting online to pay that and her tithe the week before she passed away.  Nannie has many treasures waiting for her as she was a faithful servant to God.  The day before she passed she sat up and asked Lindie if she was dying, and then preceded to tell her she was going to be with Jesus and Papa.  Nannie was never afraid she just loved life and didn’t want to leave all her children.  There are so many stories to tell that it would take hours to share.  I’m sure she touched so many lives that only Heaven knows.  I was blessed to call her Mom.  A special thanks to her very best friend Judy.  Judy cared for Mom for the last three years of her life faithfully.  We love you Judy.

Nannie is preceded in death by her husband, Dan K. Torres, brother, Ed Bombard, and one granddaughter, Aimee.  Nannie is survived by her sister, Beverly Forgey; dear friend of 50 years, Judy; children Lindie Darnell(Dan), Gary Briles(Vicki), Erin Keck(Jeff), and Danny Torres(Angela), 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, & numerous nephews, nieces, & friends.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Life Church, 10400 View High Drive, Kansas City, Missouri  64134.  Funeral service will begin at 12:00 PM with burial at 2:00 PM at Maple Hill Cemetery, 2301 S. 34th St., Kansas City, KS  66106.  Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Alice Torres to Finishing Strong in care of Life Church, P.O. Box 7076, Lee’s Summit, MO  64064 or at tickcmo.com.

CHARLOTTE OSHINSKI
On March 4, 2019, Charlotte Oshinski lost her battle of congestive heart failure and other health conditions. She was a wonderful mother to Catherine Lawrence Brock (Robert) and Stephen Oshinski (Lisa Dalton Oshinski). Her three grandchildren, Erik Lawrence, Morgan Oshinski Marquez (Tony) and Molly Oshinski will miss her caring and nurturing nature always. Her dear friends were very close to her. Two friends were especially close; She and Louise were best buddies for 80 years and close behind was her friendship with Evelyn for 70 years. She loved movies but we sure didn’t share her fondness for horror movies like Halloween and Dracula. Not to mention Charlie Chan and the Thin Man. She enjoyed traveling, going out to musicals, ballets and dinner and spending time with her family. Celebrations of life for Charlotte will be held at a later date.

Here are some suggestions if you would care to donate to an organization in her honor: American Heart Association, a local pet adoption or rescue location or a local battered women’s shelter.

Soua Thao Heu

Soua Thao Heu: A beloved, beautiful, and strong wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt passed away on February 14, 2019 at the age of 69.

She is survived by her husband Chay Heu and five children, Foung Hawj, Fue Heu, Bao Heu, Chue Heu, and Thai Heu.

Soua was born in Nangha Mongpheng, Laos and grew up with very little education. She married her husband, Chay Heu in 1964. She was a self-made businesswoman operating her own food market stand at the Long Tien Morning Market and pharmacy store in Ban Xon City and was a mother figure to many highland students living in her Vientiane home for school in the city.
After the Secret War in Laos in 1975 to escape the threat of genocide of the Hmong people, Soua took her five children through the jungles of Laos and across the Mekong River to Ban Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand.
On September 2, 1976, Soua and her family arrived in the United States after receiving political asylum. They first resided in Souix Fall, South Dakota then moved to Houston, Texas. Kansas City, KS became home in 1980 where she became a founding and devoting member of the First Hmong Missionary Alliance Church. Soua also started school for the first time in her life at the age of 32 and received her E.S.L certificate. In 2008, Soua and her family moved to Minnesota.
While in the United States, Soua worked two jobs to support her children after her husband became disabled. Soua retired at the age of 52 and continued with ministry work with her husband in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and Minnesota. Her goal in life was to make sure that all of her children finished school and became independent.
Soua’s health deteriorated in 2013. She battled through many surgeries and lived a meaningful and fulfilled life, always positively impacting all those around her. To every person who knew her, she will forever be remembered for her kind soul and love serving God.

Funeral service will be held in Kansas City, KS on March 9th, 2019 to March 10th, 2019 from 10:00am to 5:00pm at Faith Deliverance Family Worship Center, 3043 State Ave., Kansas City, KS 66102, 913-321-5220.

JANICE F. BURKHEAD

Visitation on Friday, March 01, 2019 at Kansas City Funeral Directors, 4880 Shawnee Drive, Kansas City, Kansas from 5 pm to 7 pm. Funeral Mass on Saturday, March 02, 2019, 10 am at
St. Andrew the Apostle, 6415 NE Antioch Road, Gladstone, Missouri. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven, 126th and Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas.

Janice grew up in Great Bend, KS, “one of six kids,” as she’d proudly say. Her parents and siblings were very special to her regardless of the road miles between. She married the love of her life, Lee, in 1969, and was a devoted, loving, and spirited wife for almost 50 years. Janice was beyond generous with her love, support, and encouragement for her children, Amy and Jason, and she welcomed daughter-in-law Carla with open arms. Her pride and joy for the last ten years has been her grandson, Dylan, and we are all grateful he had the chance to know her. She is also survived by brothers Jim Graf (Kathy), Tom Graf (Shyrlene), David Graf (Julie); sister-in-law Robbie Graf and brother-in-law Steve Bogart.

Janice’s love of travel led to many wonderful vacations with family and friends: from camping in national parks to cruises porting at her favorite beaches. She enjoyed learning, and often said she’d be a perpetual student if she could. She voraciously read books of all kinds, and she tackled crosswords and trivia faster than one could blink. Janice was a role model working full time as a corporate marketing and advertising writer and raising a family when doing so was still rare. Most importantly, she was always there for her loved ones—whenever they needed her, she offered support, encouragement, and a rose-colored version of the world.

With her sparkling blue eyes and lovely smile, Janice would bring light and life to any room she entered. We know she brings the same with her to heaven.
