Kristin Marcel, 37, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2022, in the comfort of her home, under the soft glow of Halloween lights, in the arms of her foster mom, Linda and her mother, Connie, sitting next to her. She will be missed by many friends, family and caregivers who affectionately referred to her as Toader, Sis, Sissy, and Kris.
Kristin attended school at Bethel Church Elementary, Eisenhower Middle School, and Lake Mary Center High School. After graduation she attended programs including Tri-Co, Dreams Work Kris N Mo, LLC Day Services, and Lake Mary Center SFL Residential program. In 2007, she moved in with her middle school teacher, Linda, and former classmate, Mo, where they formed Kris N Mo, LLC - a limited license program tailored to meet their specific needs as two adults with developmental and physical disabilities.
Kristin participated in many activities over the years: Special Olympics, book club, sewing class, and “strolling’ through dozens of 5k’s throughout the KC Metro area. She enjoyed making beautiful art at Skills to Succeed Create Art Studio and was a regular in tap class at Betty Tillotson’s School of Dance. Kris also stayed active swimming at Olathe Community Center, going to movies at AMC, bowling, attending theater or musical performances, shopping and going on many travel adventures.
Some of Kristin’s favorite things were weekly massages with Lisa (it was her most favorite thing), manicures with Phon and Holly, facials with Chelsi and Lisa, getting her hair colored by Jessie, fielding compliments like being told she was pretty, listening to country music (she loved Taylor Swift) and “strolling” the lake in her jogger stroller. Prior to getting a feeding tube Kristin she had favorite indulgence foods including sausage & gravy biscuits, Chipotle bowls, bubble gum flavored pedialyte, and cheesecake.
Kris was known for her love of fashion which included a wide variety of SCARY PANTS, tutus, costumes, fun pajamas, socks that look like shoes, big hair bows and fancy sunglasses. Her personality was always present through her smile, her laugh, crinkling her nose, her long hair, her eyelashes, clapping her hands, sucking her thumb, throwing amazing birthday parties, ‘playing possum’, cat naps, her Dom De Luise laugh, flirting, her cuddles, her unfathomable strength and resiliency, and her middle of the night ‘parties’. Most importantly she will be remembered for defying the odds and changing the perceptions of the disabled in her local and medical communities. Kris was a beautiful person and soul, she was Wonder Woman to Mo’s Super Man and was so loved and admired she had a business catered to and named after her!
Kristin liked to give back to her community by volunteering at the soup kitchen, handing out medals at the MGA 5K, fostering dogs, and raising money for local animal shelters by using assistive technology to sew items for family and friends.
Kris was fortunate to have a tribe of women who loved, supported, and participated in her life. She was able to cross several things off her bucket list over the years: dance in a recital (twice), participate in a photo shoot, go to Disneyland, swim with dolphins, visit New Orleans, see the St. Louis arch, tour Elvis’ house and Nashville, see the Royal Gorge, the Grand Canyon, attend the Hot Air Balloon festival in New Mexico, attend a few Royals games, rode in a carriage around downtown KC, and was a bridesmaid in a wedding. She left the unchecked items on her bucket list for her housemate (Mo) to finish in her memory.
Kristin leaves behind her mother, Connie Parker; sister, Amanda Marcel; maternal grandfather, Joe Zagar; paternal grandmother, Barbara Marcel; roommate, Mohammad Adami; caregiver, Linda Lott; dogs, Rebel, Jack and Norman: numerous friends and family members. Kristin also leaves behind many people who adored and loved her unconditionally; Skip and Kaye Perkins, Angela LaVille, Denise Kieffaber, Deb Callahan, Amy Ramsey, Becky Hayes, Brad and Cindy Applebaugh, Lynn Ketelaar, Heather Garten, Chasity Harmon, Judy Moore, Michelle Smotherman and all the women who rallied around her this past year, showing up for ‘Kristin Cuddles’ and helping with anything that was needed while Kristin was in hospice (and during COVID).
Kristin was preceded in death by brother, Brandon Marcel; Grandmother, Mary Lou Zagar; her pen pal, Lonna Jennings and many friends, family members and canine companions.
A very special thank you to her amazing team of physicians who treated her with dignity, respect, and compassion: M. Jayaram, Connor Hartpence, Brian Metz (and the entire staff at Midwest ENT), Michael Seeley, Jesse Watts, David Cassell, Paresh Patel, Dennis Lawlor, David Parrish and Jeremy Dulin; her amazing nurses Erin, Kindall, Tiffany, Allison, Charlene, Shelby and Kim and the caring staff at Ridgeview Family Dentistry; her longtime advocate, case manager and friend, Corine Priddy at Lake Mary Center; Father Joel for her in-home confirmation; Chris Kieffaber, Marc Blundell and Jamie Harmon who made her home accessible; Arianna Lott and family for skyping every week to read books and perform comedic skits; photographers Chris Lengquist, Kim Gramling and Mary Schulte for all of the beautiful memories, and to all the Inspire Hospice and Ascend Hospice staff.
In lieu of flowers, to honor Kris, please consider donating in Kristin’s name to Prairie Paws Animal Shelter at www.prariepaws.org, the foster program she volunteered for, Angels Left Behind animal rescue at www.angelsleftbehind.org or to fund her remaining bucket list items for Mo to complete in her memory at Kris N Mo, LLC, PO Box 2071, Olathe, KS 66051.
To keep her memory alive, tell someone they’re pretty, take a nap, wear the tutu, pajamas or scary pants, get a massage, bask in a compliment, foster an animal, donate, or volunteer your time to those in need and be an advocate for the voiceless.
Kris gave us 337 wonderful days past her original hospice diagnosis. She also gave us the gift of a long goodbye to enjoy her time, her spirit, her vibe and her love. Thank you, Kris, for your final selfless act, we needed that. You will be remembered and cherished forever and always.
There will be a celebration of her life at her group home for her friends on Friday, February 18, 2022, from 5p to 7p. Please wear a mask and come dressed in a Wonder Woman t-shirt, tutu or costume, Kris would’ve loved that! There will be a separate graveside service reserved for family members at a later date.

The Legacy of Beverly Ione Brown Murphy

Beverly Ione Brown Murphy began her life on May 22, 1958 at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. She was the second child born to the late Julius Rudolph Brown and the late Lavette Ardelia Glover Brown.

Beverly was educated in the Kansas City Kansas Public School system. She attended Douglass Elementary School, Northeast Junior High School and Sumner High School. Beverly was a flutist and played in the junior high and senior high school orchestra and marching bands. She was a proud member of the Sumner High Graduating Class of 1976. After graduation, she attended Friends University in Wichita, Kansas for two years.

Beverly was employed with the Federal Government for over 15 years. However, she was a very passionate and caring person which led to her positions as a teacher’s aide and home health caregiver. Beverly was very active and was always on the go. She had several side gigs that kept her quite busy. Beverly was a gifted seamstress and could be found making an outfit for someone or creating designs through her sewing business called BeVerle’s Fashions. She also had a home income tax preparation business. And, if that wasn’t enough, she drove for Postmates and DoorDash.

A faithful servant leader, when Beverly wasn’t working, she was active in her church, Bethel Seventh Day Adventist. She served in several capacities: as head of the Health Ministry, a member of the Prayer Ministry, Community Service, singing in the choir, a Board Member, and assisted with the Children’s Ministry.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Julian; sister, Janice; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Beverly will forever be remembered and missed by her family and friends. She leaves to carry on her legacy: LaMont Brown, LaNita Carey (Tauwana), LaVette Wilkins (Gene), LaRhone Word; nephew, Antoine Evans; baby sister, Dr. Sandra R. Brown (Beverly); 13 grandchildren; Godsister, Kimberly Boyd Walker; Godbrother, Stanley Boyd; her cousin twin, Helene Williams; special family friends, Sabrina and Jamel Williams; and a host of other cousins, friends, and her church family.

Although Beverly is no longer with us physically, her eternal journey continues. May she be at peace and rest safely in the bosom of God.

The angels are singing, “well done, thy good and faithful servant”.
